In this module we take a quick look at three things: the statute language for school libraries, language specifically in regards to book banning, and the definitions of both a librarian and a school media specialist.
Here is the 2023 language specifying five required characteristics of school libraries and/or media centers.

Take a closer look at characteristic 2, above. A point can be made that following "a collection development plan that includes but is not limited to materials selection and deselection, a challenged materials procedure, and an intellectual and academic freedom statement," actions are inherently and effectively prevented from being misinterpreted as "banning books." Especially with the included language of selection criteria, as we will look more closely at in an upcoming lesson.
